Amid the civil conflict in Sudan, Türkiye is supporting education for affected students by relocating them to Turkish universities like Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University. This is part of YÖK’s “Guest University Initiative,” which aims to strengthen Sudanese academic ties and foster international collaboration. Students express gratitude for the advanced educational opportunities and commitment to improving Sudan’s educational landscape upon their return.
In response to the civil war in Sudan, Türkiye has provided support for education by relocating students and academics from El-Butana University to Niğde Ömer Halisdemir University, coordinated by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). This initiative aims to continue education for those affected by the conflict.
YÖK’s “Guest University Initiative” will also see Sudan’s Bahri and El-Neelain Universities hosted at Selçuk University and Inönü University. This program not only benefits Sudanese students but also strengthens relations between Türkiye and Sudan, setting a precedent for collaboration within the Islamic world.
Erol Özvar, President of YÖK, stated that the initiative enriches the educational landscape in Türkiye while continuing a legacy of academic support. He emphasized that existing Sudanese students at these universities create a welcoming atmosphere for new arrivals, enhancing cultural exchange and collaboration.
The ongoing conflict, which began on April 15, 2023, has created a humanitarian crisis in Sudan, causing significant disruptions to education due to the damage of university facilities. YÖK responded to a call from the Sudanese Ministry of Higher Education, reaffirming their commitment to ensuring that education in Sudan does not face permanent closure.
El-Butana University Rector Mohmoud Yacob Mohmoud shared the challenges faced during the transition to online learning, citing limited resources. He expressed gratitude towards Türkiye for their prompt assistance, acknowledging it as a critical lifeline for Sudanese students in need of educational stability.
Mohmoud underscored his intent to leverage the knowledge gained in Türkiye to reform educational practices back home. Similarly, students like Ferass Aiaaldeen Gahalrsoul Faragalla and Rashida Ebrahim Hussein shared their positive experiences in academic environments enriched with advanced facilities, highlighting their commitment to applying new skills in Sudan after their studies.
Türkiye’s commitment to supporting Sudanese education amid conflict demonstrates the importance of international cooperation in higher education. The Guest University Initiative exemplifies proactive measures by YÖK to address urgent educational needs, fostering relationships that benefit both countries. Sudanese students are eager to bring their enhanced skills and knowledge back home, advocating for improved educational standards and contributing to national development.
