On Tuesday, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani met with Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh in Doha to discuss cooperation and regional matters. Their conversations covered bilateral relations alongside critical regional issues, notably the crises in Gaza and Syria, as stated in a Foreign Ministry release cited by News.Az through Anadolu.
Sheikh Mohammed reaffirmed Qatar’s unwavering support for Libya’s unity and emphasized the importance of fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan people for stability and development. He also voiced Qatar’s commitment to endorsing the political process in Libya, relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and any peaceful resolutions that uphold Libya’s sovereignty and integrity.
Efforts by the UN and local actors are underway to facilitate elections in Libya to resolve ongoing conflicts between two rival governments. The Government of National Unity, led by Dbeibeh from Tripoli and recognized by the UN, contrasts with the eastern government formed by the House of Representatives in 2022, headed by Osama Hamad in Benghazi.
Libyan citizens are hopeful that these long-awaited elections will put an end to the ongoing political and armed strife and conclude transitional periods following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, which lasted from 1969 until 2011.
The meeting between Qatari and Libyan leaders highlighted crucial discussions on bilateral cooperation and regional challenges, particularly in light of ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Syria.
