The African Development Bank signed a $44.9 million agreement with Chad to fund the asphalting of a key road section, enhancing infrastructure in the agricultural-rich Moyen-Chari region. The project aims to improve transportation, resilience, and connectivity, opening avenues for economic growth and better access to essential services. This agreement will support broader initiatives for regional road development.
The African Development Bank (AfDB) and Chadian authorities recently established a $44.9 million grant agreement aimed at asphalting the Kyabé-Mayo section of the Kyabé-Singako road, which spans 49.5 kilometers. This agreement was formalized in N’Djamena on February 19, 2025, by Tahir Hamid Nguilin, Minister of State for Finance, along with Claude N’Kodia, the Acting Representative of the Bank in Chad. Several Chadian government officials, including the Minister for Infrastructure, were also in attendance.
The funding aligns with the Chadian government’s strategic priority to enhance infrastructure. As Nguilin noted, the Moyen-Chari region, which includes significant economic zones such as Kyabé, is crucial for agriculture, livestock, and fishery resources. Improving this road is anticipated to facilitate better transport of goods, particularly agricultural and livestock products.
By enhancing connectivity, the project is poised to bolster the resilience of vulnerable populations, including women and youth. It will provide an all-weather road, improving travel between Kyabé and Singako and thereby easing the distribution of agricultural outputs to major consumer centers like Sarh and N’Djamena. Additionally, this road will connect Moyen-Chari to Sudan, broadening trade opportunities.
Furthermore, this agreement sets the stage for further support from the Islamic Development Bank for subsequent sections of the Mayo-Singako-Am Timan road project, which has an estimated total cost of $275.5 million. Claude N’Kodia emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating that it will lower transportation costs and enhance quality of life through increased access to health and education facilities.
The Kyabé-Mayo segment represents a vital link in the broader N’Djamena-Moundou-Sarh-Kyabé-Am Timan-Abéché corridor and is essential for the Chadian government’s initiative to create a comprehensive transport network across the nation. The AfDB’s ongoing commitment to Chad focuses on infrastructure development and good governance, ensuring long-term economic growth and improved public governance.
In summary, the collaboration between the African Development Bank and Chad to finance the Kyabé-Mayo road asphalting is a strategic move towards enhancing regional infrastructure. This project is expected to facilitate economic growth, strengthen resilience in local communities, and improve access to essential services. It highlights the ongoing partnership between the AfDB and Chad, aimed at fostering sustainable development through investment in critical transport networks.
