Turkey Demands Role in European Defence Strategy Amid Regional Challenges

Turkish FM Hakan Fidan insists on Turkey’s inclusion in future European defence strategies, citing the country’s military strength and strategic location. He warns against excluding Turkey from European security discussions and urges for urgent humanitarian aid in Gaza. Additionally, Turkey and Albania aim to significantly boost their bilateral trade.

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan asserted Turkey’s essential role in any future European defence strategy, highlighting the nation’s strategic location and military capabilities. At a joint news conference with his Albanian counterpart, he emphasized the impracticality of a European security framework that excludes Turkey’s military force, stating, “A security architecture approach that leaves out a military force like Turkey, would not be very realistic.”

Fidan further argued that for a European security architecture to be genuinely operational, Turkey’s involvement is crucial. He noted a significant shift in US policy towards Ukraine, contrasting it with previous administrations. As European nations seek to reduce dependence on US security commitments, Turkey’s position remains complex due to its relations with Russia and distinctive foreign policy.

In addition to these points, Fidan called for immediate international efforts to avert a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stressing the danger of mass fatalities from starvation and disease. He highlighted the need for innovative methods to deliver humanitarian aid to the affected region. Meanwhile, Turkey and Albania are working towards enhancing bilateral trade, with the goal of reaching €1 billion annually, and doubling it through better business cooperation and investments.

Turkey seeks inclusion in future European defence strategies due to its strategic significance and military strength. Fidan’s remarks also underscore the urgency for humanitarian aid in Gaza and the need for Turkey and Albania to enhance trade relations. As Europe adjusts its security framework, Turkey’s unique position remains vital but complex, especially in light of its relations with Russia and US policy shifts.
