GPHC Pathology Lab Achieves GYS 170 Certification Enhancing Healthcare Quality

GPHC’s Pathology Lab has received GYS 170 Certification shortly after its launch by the President. Valid for two years, the certification assures quality lab practices, effective disease diagnosis, and aims for future ISO accreditation. Investing in staff training and reducing diagnosis turnaround times indicates GPHC’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services in Guyana.

The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation’s (GPHC) Pathology Lab has achieved GYS 170 Certification, a significant milestone marked by a ceremony attended by health officials. This certification was accomplished within just one year following the lab’s commissioning by President Irfaan Ali. It signifies the lab’s capability to analyze bodily samples for disease detection, which aids in doctor diagnoses and treatment planning.

The GYS 170 Certification, valid for two years, requires the Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) to perform unannounced visits to ensure compliance. Adhering to this standard mitigates contamination risks, aids healthcare providers in making informed decisions, and enhances collaborative efforts across borders, thereby fostering continuous improvement.

GNBS Executive Director Trevor Bassoo noted that the 2001 revision of the GYS 170 Certification aligned it more closely with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, moving locally certified labs like GPHC’s toward international accreditation. He emphasized that the increase in certified laboratories reflects a national shift toward standard adherence, contributing to reliable test results and a healthier population.

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony emphasized the advanced equipment at GPHC, stating it could significantly impact cancer diagnoses, offering better specificity in identifying conditions. He highlighted the lab’s capability to provide comprehensive histopathology services versus previous limitations in understanding pathology.

GPHC’s CEO Robbie Rambarran revealed plans to attain ISO accreditation by the end of Q2. He acknowledged the need for additional staff to improve diagnostic turnaround times, which have already impressively decreased from over 30 days to just seven days. Investment in staff training has been prioritized to enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of the services offered.

The GYS 170 Certification attained by GPHC’s Pathology Lab underscores significant advancements in healthcare quality in Guyana. The establishment and certification of this lab demonstrate a commitment to international standards in pathology services. GPHC’s lab primarily focuses on analyzing samples for various diseases, ultimately improving health outcomes for patients by enabling precise diagnoses and treatment plans. The certification process ensures that the lab operates under strict guidelines, promoting safety and efficiency in lab practices. The GNBS plays an essential role in regulating health service standards in Guyana, ensuring all certified facilities adhere to necessary safety and quality protocols. The alignment with ISO standards indicates a broader goal of achieving international recognition, which will further place Guyana on the map in terms of healthcare capabilities.

The achievement of GYS 170 Certification by GPHC’s Pathology Lab is a commendable development, enhancing the quality of healthcare in Guyana. This certification not only signifies adherence to rigorous testing standards but also reflects a commitment to continuous improvement and reliable patient care. With ongoing investments in staff training and the ambition for ISO accreditation, GPHC is well-positioned to deliver high-quality pathology services that meet both local and international expectations.
