TGS has finalized the reprocessing of the MC3D GeoStreamer dataset for Block 16 in Angola, enhancing seismic imaging for deeper exploration. The Lower Congo Basin, recently revitalized for oil and gas, will benefit from improved insights on underexplored reservoirs, including the Tchihumba Field and the Lumpembe-1 discovery. TGS, a leading energy data provider, has successfully reprocessed the MC3D GeoStreamer seismic dataset for Block 16 in Angola’s Lower Congo Basin in collaboration with the Agência Nacional de Petróleo, Gás e Biocombustíveis (ANPG). This endeavor aims to enhance seismic imaging and facilitate detailed assessments of deeper oil and gas reservoirs in both post-salt and pre-salt formations, significantly improving exploration capabilities in the region.
The revived interest in Angola’s deepwater Lower Congo Basin has resulted in several substantial discoveries, with this particular project covering 3,684 square kilometers. Historically, Block 16 has remained relatively unexplored since 2013, with only the Bengo and Longa discoveries previously documented in the northern section until recent evaluations indicated potential in the southern area.
The reprocessed survey includes partial insights into the Tchihumba Field, which is currently being promoted by ANPG. Discovered in 2003, Tchihumba features hydrocarbon zones in Upper Miocene, Lower Miocene, and Oligocene sands, estimated to contain around 136 million barrels of recoverable oil. Furthermore, the Lumpembe-1 discovery from Block 15/06, currently in development studies, also lies within the survey’s reach.
