During Elder D. Todd Christofferson’s mission in Africa from February 13-24, 2023, he met with His Royal Majesty King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, the leader of the Ga people in Ghana, on February 20. The king expressed that his prior meeting with President Russell M. Nelson in April 2023 had a significant spiritual impact on him, reviving his approach to leadership and community service.
The Ga Mantse recounted how President Nelson’s insightful guidance ignited a renewed passion for his responsibilities. He described it as being infused with energy to pursue his endeavors, emphasizing the lasting effect of the counsel he received.
Elder Christofferson’s diplomatic visit, accompanied by Elder Michael T. Ringwood and others, included discussions on ongoing and future collaborative projects. The king expressed gratitude for the Church’s contributions, particularly regarding the refurbishment of local schools, and acknowledged the vital role of humanitarian efforts in his community.
The king underscored the importance of such initiatives, which he referred to as “Christianity in action,” highlighting their necessity for enhancing physical welfare alongside spiritual growth. His commitment extends to various projects including sanitation improvements, vocational training, health services, and youth empowerment, many of which involve cooperation with the Church.
King Tackie has been pivotal in supporting Church-led community initiatives, including hosting the Strengthening Families Conference. Currently, he seeks to construct a children’s hospital, funded by a donated plot from the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, to serve the needs of Accra’s youth.
Elder Christofferson encouraged the Church’s Welfare and Self-Reliance team to consider support for this new hospital project. To commemorate their meeting, he presented the king with a framed painting, symbolizing their shared values. He hoped the piece would be displayed in the upcoming hospital.
The gathering concluded with a mutual commitment to future cooperative actions, aiming for sustained productive interactions and support of community development initiatives.
Elder Christofferson’s meeting with the Ga Mantse illustrates the collaborative efforts between the Church and local leaders in Ghana. The emphasis on humanitarian projects reflects a commitment to both physical and spiritual upliftment. As they plan for future endeavors, including the children’s hospital, their partnership appears poised to benefit the community significantly.
