Jordan’s King Abdullah and Syria’s interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa convened in Amman to enhance border security against arms and drug trafficking. During their meeting, King Abdullah condemned recent Israeli airstrikes on southern Damascus, part of continued Israeli military actions targeting Syrian forces. Both leaders recognized the need for strengthened coordination to effectively tackle these illicit activities, which have plagued Jordan’s border since the regime of former President Bashar al-Assad.
Jordan has attributed the increase in smuggling to pro-Iranian militias controlling southern Syria under Assad. In response, Sharaa has committed to combatting these issues. His visit marks Sharaa’s third international trip since he assumed power, following visits to Saudi Arabia and Turkey after leading the offensive that ousted Assad.
Relations between Assad and neighboring countries were severely impacted during the nearly 14-year Syrian conflict. Jordan, which was pivotal in initial international discussions on Syria shortly after Assad fled, is keen on facilitating a peaceful political transition to avert instability along its borders.
The Jordanian monarch also expressed support for a recent national dialogue held in Damascus, deeming it a significant step towards Syria’s reconstruction and aligning with the aspirations of its people. Furthermore, Jordan has offered assistance in rebuilding Syria, particularly in addressing its energy shortages by providing electricity and gas.
