Tunisia has launched 5G services through three telecom operators: Orange Tunisie, Ooredoo Tunisie, and Tunisie Télécom. The initiative by the government aims to enhance the digital economy and improve connectivity. Each operator has secured licenses and is deploying their respective services, contributing to the country’s growing telecommunications ecosystem.
Tunisia has made a significant leap in telecommunications by launching 5G services across the country, courtesy of three major operators: Orange Tunisie, Ooredoo Tunisie, and Tunisie Télécom. This rollout followed a quick implementation after the operators received their required licenses, marking a pivotal step for the nation’s digital landscape.
The introduction of 5G services is part of a strategic initiative by the Tunisian Ministry of Communication Technologies, which began this process in July 2024. Operators were awarded 5MHz in the 700MHz band and 100MHz in the 3.5GHz band, with licenses valid for 15 years; future expansion in frequency bands is also planned.
Orange Tunisie has spearheaded the deployment with 400 active 5G sites and offers a fixed wireless access router integrated with Wi-Fi 6. The telecom also launched a specialized “Turbo option” catering to gamers and streaming users, along with a 5G Lab near the Orange Digital Center in Tunis, focusing on enterprise applications in sectors like Industry 4.0, healthcare, and education.
Ooredoo Tunisia has introduced its “Fix Jdid 5G” service, delivering fixed wireless access with speeds up to 100 Mbit/s. CEO Mansoor Rashid Al-Khater underscored the importance of 5G in propelling Tunisia’s digital economy forward and fostering innovation among entrepreneurs.
Tunisie Télécom capitalized on its robust fiber optic network to facilitate its 5G rollout. The company’s CEO, Lassâad Ben Dhiab, mentioned plans to activate a new submarine cable system within a year, promising better service quality for customers.
According to market data from Omdia, Ooredoo Tunisie has the highest mobile subscriber base at 6.4 million, followed by Orange Tunisie with 4.6 million and Tunisie Télécom with 4.3 million as of late 2024. The arrival of 5G introduces a fresh layer to Tunisia’s telecom infrastructure, effectively enhancing the existing 2G, 3G, and 4G services provided by these companies.
The recent launch of 5G services in Tunisia by major telecom operators marks a crucial advancement in the nation’s telecommunications sector. This initiative not only expands high-speed internet access but also aims to stimulate economic growth and innovation. The collaboration between the operators and the Ministry of Communication Technologies promises a bright digital future for Tunisia.
