Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have tightened their control over Bukavu, capturing the city a day prior and displacing many residents. The M23, supported by Rwandan forces, is one of numerous armed groups competing for mineral wealth in eastern Congo. Amid ongoing protests demanding the withdrawal of foreign troops, fears of continued instability linger among the local population.
Rwanda-backed rebels, known as M23, have reinforced their control over Bukavu, a major city in eastern Congo, a day after capturing it. Bukavu, home to approximately 1.3 million inhabitants, was taken by the rebels after Congolese forces retreated. This city is strategically located 63 miles south of Goma, which fell to the M23 in January 2023.
The M23 represents one of over 100 armed factions competing for access to eastern Congo’s vast mineral reserves, crucial to global technology supply chains. U.N. experts estimate that around 4,000 Rwandan troops support the M23 in their operations. The ongoing conflict has displaced over six million people, contributing to what is recognized as the most severe humanitarian crisis globally.
As M23 approached Bukavu, many residents attempted to flee, while others looted shops for supplies. A heavy silence enveloped the city as the population prepared for the M23’s takeover. The following morning saw residents cautiously returning to the streets while M23 forces monitored key areas.
Despite gradually resuming activities, fear of instability remains pervasive among the citizens. Local shopkeeper David Balezi remarked that residents are still hesitant to resume normal life due to ongoing insecurities. Meanwhile, Bukavu’s border with Rwanda remained closed, and most businesses had halted operations.
Reflecting the city’s uncertainty, resident David Munyaga commented, “Now we thank God that the situation is OK, even if we don’t know what’s coming.” In Goma, M23’s influence sparked protests against international peacekeeping units and the Congolese government, with demonstrators demanding immediate action.
As tensions escalate in Bukavu, French President Emmanuel Macron has advocated for an immediate ceasefire, withdrawal of M23 forces, and a return of local authorities to the city.
The recent takeover of Bukavu by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels underscores a critical juncture in the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo. With millions displaced and ongoing protests against international forces, the humanitarian crisis continues to escalate. International intervention calls for a ceasefire and increased scrutiny may shape the future of this volatile region amidst broader global issues.
