Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has been elected Chairperson of the African Union Commission during a summit in Addis Ababa, succeeding Moussa Faki. Selma Malika Haddadi was elected as Deputy Chairperson. Youssouf aims to focus on governance and financial management, dealing with various crises facing the continent.
During the 38th ordinary summit of continental leaders held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 15 February 2025, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Djibouti’s Foreign Minister, was elected as the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC) for a four-year term. He succeeds Moussa Faki of Chad, who has been in charge since 2017. Algeria’s Selma Malika Haddadi was also elected as Deputy Chairperson.
Youssouf’s election comes with significant challenges as he takes the leadership of the AUC amidst ongoing crises in various African nations. His focus on financial management and internal fund mobilization reflects a commitment to addressing governance issues. The AUC, replacing the former Organization of African Unity, will be crucial in navigating Africa’s complex socio-political landscape over the next four years.
