Chief Olabode George of the PDP has criticized President Bola Tinubu, claiming his administration is steering Nigeria toward authoritarianism. He expressed concerns that recent actions undermine democracy, notably the emergency declaration in Rivers State. George urges citizens to demand accountability and protect democratic values.
In a strong critique of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Chief Olabode George, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party, has raised alarms about Nigeria’s democratic health. Speaking to reporters in Lagos, George warned that the country is veering towards authoritarianism, stating that governance has been sidelined by what he calls political theatrics – a dangerous trend in Nigerian politics today.
George emphasized that Nigeria stands at a crucial crossroads. He argued that the very fabric of democratic governance is being threatened. He remarked, “Nigeria currently finds itself at a critical juncture, where the actions of the current political administration threaten to erode the very foundations of our hard-won democracy.” The concerns he raised stemmed from a growing doubt among citizens who question whether their government truly reflects the will of the people.
Critically, George pointed to recent events in Rivers State, particularly the emergency declaration by Tinubu on March 18, 2025, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other elected officials. He described these actions as unconstitutional and reflective of severe issues within the nation’s democratic framework. “It is noteworthy that before and even after the emergency declaration, Rivers State witnessed no significant incidents of violence—not even a chicken was killed,” he noted, highlighting the disproportionate response to an apparent lack of unrest.
Additionally, George expressed deep concern regarding a letter sent by Tinubu to the National Assembly that requested confirmations for key appointments under emergency rule. He viewed this move as a blatant disregard for democratic norms and warned of the implications, claiming it exposes a trend towards consolidating power. He stated, “The President’s insistence on these appointments reveals a troubling disregard for democratic principles.”
Furthermore, he criticized the Senate’s endorsement of the emergency rule, which was conducted through a voice vote instead of the required two-thirds majority. According to George, this procedural lapse raises serious questions about the legitimacy of such a significant action. He noted, “The law is clear: two-thirds of members must approve a state of emergency. What is the meaning of a voice vote? Did they get the numbers?”
To drive his point home, George reminded Tinubu of his past criticisms against former President Jonathan’s use of emergency declarations, urging him to reflect on his own approach to power. He warned, “Tinubu, if your advisers won’t tell you the truth, Nigerians have spoken with one voice: your despotic tendencies—disguised as emergency measures—cannot stand.”
With this strong message, George now contends that Nigeria is sliding down a precarious path, and he calls on citizens to engage actively with the state to protect democracy. He insists it’s time for a concerted effort towards fostering a government that serves its people rather than undermining them.
Chief Olabode George has voiced grave concerns regarding President Bola Tinubu’s governance, alleging that Nigeria is at risk of losing its democratic foundations. His commentary reflects unease about recent government actions, particularly the controversial emergency declaration in Rivers State, which he argues undermines democracy. George calls for accountability and a renewed commitment to the principles of governance that honor the voices and rights of the citizens.
