Israel Expands Military Operations and Security Zone in Gaza Strip

Israel is expanding military operations in the southern Gaza Strip by creating a new security zone and enhancing the Morag Corridor. This development follows the resumption of fighting after a ceasefire, as the IDF aims to dismantle Hamas infrastructure while negotiations for hostage release and ceasefire continue.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are considerably increasing their operations in the southern Gaza Strip by establishing a new security zone between Rafah and the Egyptian border. This initiative includes the expansion of the Morag Corridor, which now links Rafah to the Philadelphi Corridor, thereby designating this area as part of Israel’s security perimeter.

IDF spokesperson Avichai Adrei indicated that the military controls roughly one-third of the Gaza Strip, using these areas as a “defensive security zone.” The escalation of ground operations will depend on the prevailing operational circumstances, with plans to dismantle Hamas infrastructure both above and below ground.

Despite a ceasefire and prisoner exchange achieved in January 2025, tensions escalated with active fighting resuming on March 2, following a six-week truce. The IDF initiated ground operations near Rafah to further enhance the security area, raising concerns over a possible full-scale occupation of Gaza.

Israel is intensifying efforts to secure the release of all hostages and seeks to demilitarize Hamas. However, Hamas representatives, like Mahmoud Mardawi, have reiterated that they will not disarm and are preparing a response regarding Israel’s proposals for negotiations.

On April 15, Hamas rejected a new Israeli proposal which required militants to vacate the enclave, demanding instead the IDF’s withdrawal and a revival of the hostage exchange negotiations. Ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire involve key international mediators, including the US, Qatar, and Egypt.

Israel has intensified military operations in the Gaza Strip, establishing a new security zone while controlling a significant area. Despite earlier ceasefires, fighting has resumed, creating uncertainty about future engagements. The situation remains complicated by ongoing negotiations between Israeli officials and Hamas, with key demands on both sides regarding hostages and military presence. Future developments will hinge on operational circumstances and international mediation efforts.
