NATO foreign ministers will meet in Brussels to discuss key topics including defense spending, support for Ukraine, and collaboration with Indo-Pacific partners. A NATO Liaison Office will be established in Amman to enhance regional security in the Middle East. The discussions reflect NATO’s ongoing commitment to stability and cooperation across both European and Middle Eastern contexts.

NATO foreign ministers are convening in Brussels on Thursday and Friday to prepare for the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, scheduled for late June. Key topics of discussion will include enhancing defense spending among member nations, developing defense industrial capabilities, supporting Ukraine, and boosting cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners such as Australia, Japan, New Zealand, and South Korea.

A NATO official emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum in defense spending, restructuring defense production, and continuing support for Ukraine while enhancing collaboration on mutual interests with partners. This meeting follows visits by NATO Secretary General to the Western Balkans, underscoring NATO’s focus on this strategically significant region.

The ministerial meeting will include a NATO-Ukraine Council session featuring Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell. Ministers will also engage with representatives from Indo-Pacific partners and the EU to discuss strengthened cooperation.

Acknowledging the impact of instability in the southern neighborhood on member state security, NATO is committed to enhancing regional stability in the Middle East and Africa. A NATO Liaison Office is set to open in Amman to facilitate communication and support local security initiatives. This reflects NATO’s ongoing commitment to build partnerships in the region.

Additionally, NATO supports stability efforts in Iraq through the NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI), which focuses on non-combat advisory support aimed at building security capacities. The mission aims to create effective, transparent security institutions and help combat terrorism, while also addressing requests from the Iraqi government to expand support for local police and internal security initiatives.

The upcoming NATO foreign ministers’ meeting plays a crucial role in discussing defense spending, support for Ukraine, and cooperation with Indo-Pacific partners. The establishment of a NATO Liaison Office in Amman signifies an enhanced focus on Middle Eastern stability. Furthermore, NATO’s mission in Iraq reinforces its commitment to regional security and the fight against terrorism, showcasing the alliance’s strategic objectives across diverse international contexts.
