Shelling by RSF in El Fasher, North Darfur, led to nine civilian deaths and 17 injuries. Concurrently, RSF attacks in El Obeid resulted in additional casualties. The Sudanese Air Force countered with successful airstrikes, while recent bombings of displaced persons camps raised concerns over targeting civilians.
On Sunday, shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in El Fasher, North Darfur’s capital, resulted in at least nine civilian fatalities and 17 injuries, as reported by the Sudanese Armed Forces’ Sixth Infantry Division. Additionally, concurrent RSF attacks in El Obeid, North Kordofan, led to the death of a child and wounded eight others.
In a countermeasure, the Sudanese Air Force successfully repelled an RSF assault on El Fasher, resulting in the destruction of four RSF military vehicles and numerous fatalities among their forces. Airstrikes on a supply convoy also eliminated 12 RSF combat vehicles, compelling the paramilitary to withdraw.
Over the weekend, five displaced individuals sustained serious injuries from SAF bombardments on the Shangil Tobaya camp in North Darfur. The General Coordination of Camps for Displaced Persons and Refugees condemned SAF for targeting civilian infrastructure and homes. Efforts to reach SAF for comments were unsuccessful.
Last week, airstrikes by SAF targeted the weekly market in North Darfur’s Tora area near El Fasher, reportedly resulting in numerous casualties. Some reports have indicated that the number of dead may reach into the hundreds. Maj Gen Ahmed Elkhader Saleh, commander of the Sixth Infantry Division, expressed determination to end the RSF siege of El Fasher, asserting that a forthcoming victory was at hand.
Since May of the previous year, El Fasher has been engulfed in conflict, as the RSF has intensified efforts to capture the last government-controlled area in Darfur. This ongoing violence has led to a humanitarian crisis, displacing a majority of the city’s residents and devastating infrastructure, including essential facilities like hospitals and water sources.
The recent shelling by RSF in North Darfur has resulted in significant civilian casualties and highlighted the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Despite the SAF’s counterattacks, the conflict remains intense, with infrastructure destruction compounding the plight of the displaced population. The situation in El Fasher symbolizes the larger struggle in Darfur, marked by instability and violence.
