Wicknell Chivayo Defends Mnangagwa Amid March 31 Protest Threats

Wicknell Chivayo defends President Mnangagwa against threats from war veteran Blessed Geza, who calls for protests over alleged government corruption. Chivayo condemns Geza’s actions as unrepresentative and illegal, labeling the protests as terrorism. This situation reveals internal factional battles within Zanu PF and emphasizes calls for lawful leadership processes until 2028.

In response to threats from war veteran Blessed ‘Bombshell’ Geza and his associates, Wicknell Chivayo, a businessman linked to Zanu PF, has defended President Emmerson Mnangagwa against planned protests. Geza, leading a faction of disgruntled war veterans, has accused Mnangagwa of corruption and called for his removal, which has prompted increased government security measures.

Chivayo criticized Geza, claiming that his political influence is insignificant and should not be taken seriously. He asserted, “Zimbabwe is a peaceful nation, known for its educated and responsible citizens,” condemning Geza’s call for protests as unrepresentative of Zimbabwean values. He labeled Geza a failed politician and suggested he is inciting instability from exile due to his dishonorable actions.

Amidst the growing tensions, Geza has targeted Chivayo, accusing him of benefiting from corrupt government contracts. Chivayo has faced scrutiny for being linked to a controversial $100 million tender awarded by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission for the upcoming elections. Notably, both Chivayo and another tycoon, Kudakwashe Tagwirei, were threatened by Geza, and vehicles were recently torched at their premises.

Chivayo characterized the planned March 31 protests as acts of terrorism against the government, stating that such actions—like property destruction—are illegal and treasonous. He encouraged citizens to disregard Geza’s protest calls, emphasizing a commitment to peaceful living without fear of upheaval.

The protest call has revealed underlying factional disputes within Zanu PF. During a recent Central Committee meeting, Mnangagwa cautioned party members sympathetic to Geza. Chivayo argued that aspirations for leadership should be deferred until Mnangagwa’s term concludes in 2028, affirming support for any democratically elected successor within Zanu PF.

The tensions surrounding the March 31 protests highlight deep-rooted conflicts within the ruling Zanu PF party, specifically the challenge posed by war veterans led by Blessed Geza against President Mnangagwa. Wicknell Chivayo’s defense of Mnangagwa, along with his criticism of Geza, underscores the urgency of addressing party divisiveness while maintaining stability in Zimbabwe. Chivayo’s assertions reflect a commitment to lawful governance amid chaotic calls for unrest.
