Sudanese Army Airstrike Kills Hundreds in Darfur Market

A Sudanese army airstrike on Tora market in North Darfur reportedly killed hundreds, according to a war monitor. The incident exacerbates an ongoing conflict that has seen tens of thousands dead and millions displaced since April 2023, with increasing violence in the region.

On March 25, 2025, a Sudanese war monitoring group reported that hundreds of people were killed during an airstrike by the Sudanese army targeting the Tora market in North Darfur. The Emergency Lawyers group, comprising legal professionals documenting wartime atrocities, emphasized that the airstrike was indiscriminate, resulting in numerous civilian casualties and injuries. The precise timing of the strike remains unspecified due to a telecommunications blackout in the area.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan began in April 2023, pitting the army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). While the Green Beret war monitor indicated hundreds of casualties, AFP has been unable to confirm these claims. In their response to the incident, the RSF accused the army of orchestrating a ‘massacre’ on Monday.

The conflict has led to the deaths of tens of thousands and displaced over 12 million people, creating significant humanitarian crises in the region. Darfur, a region comparable in size to France, has witnessed some of the most severe violence in the war, including the use of barrel bombs against civilians and paramilitary assaults on displacement camps suffering from famine.

Although the RSF operates highly advanced drones in Darfur, the Sudanese army maintains aerial superiority with its warplanes, consistently targeting RSF positions across the region. This aerial dominance has resulted in escalated violence and further complicates the humanitarian situation.

The Sudanese army’s airstrike on the Tora market in North Darfur marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, with hundreds reportedly killed and injured. The RSF’s accusations of a ‘massacre’ highlight the severe humanitarian crisis, with millions displaced and tens of thousands killed since the conflict began in 2023. Darfur continues to experience some of the worst violence, exacerbated by an imbalance in aerial capabilities between the army and paramilitary forces.
