The Philippines’ diplomatic ties with these nations date back several decades, with a focus on peace and prosperity.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. expressed optimism about enhancing diplomatic relations with Colombia, Cambodia, and Ukraine during a formal credential presentation at Malacañan Palace. Marcos emphasized that the new ambassadors—Edgar Rodrigo Rojas Garavito from Colombia, Sin Saream from Cambodia, and Yuliia Oleksandrivna Fediv from Ukraine—would play a crucial role in strengthening ties with the Philippines.
In his address to Ambassador Rojas Garavito, Marcos highlighted the potential for collaboration, stating, “I believe there’s more that we can do… strengthen and deepen the relations between our two countries.” Colombia and the Philippines have maintained formal diplomatic relations since July 5, 1946, with around 100 Filipinos living in Colombia.
Marcos also reiterated his commitment to strengthening ties with Cambodia, reflecting on strong foundational relations established on August 20, 1957. “I welcome you to the Philippines and I look forward to even stronger relationships between our two countries,” he stated to Ambassador Sin, who promised increased cooperation for mutual prosperity.
Furthermore, Ambassador Fediv from Ukraine expressed her commitment to fostering bilateral relations, aiming for peace and prosperity. Marcos reaffirmed the Philippines’ support for Ukraine in its pursuit of peace, stating, “We hope to continue… we will always support you in your efforts for peace.” Diplomatic relations with Ukraine were established on April 7, 1992, and there are currently around 24 Filipinos residing in Ukraine.
President Marcos is driving initiatives to strengthen diplomatic relationships with Colombia, Cambodia, and Ukraine through new ambassadors. He emphasized opportunities for increased cooperation that benefit mutual aspirations for peace and development while showing unwavering support for Ukraine during its peace efforts. These relationships are built on long-standing diplomatic foundations and shared community ties.
