Additionally, Qatar is seeking to diversify its economy, which has primarily relied on petroleum and natural gas, by investing in the Great Lakes region’s mineral opportunities. Economic ties with the DRC are also on the rise, as evidenced by Qatar Airways’ expansion to Kinshasa. This increase in flight services is aimed at enhancing air connectivity across Africa and fostering business and cultural partnerships. Muya noted that Qatar’s mediation is unsurprising, given its close relationship with both countries.
In light of the peace process, Angolan President Joao Lourenco is calling for direct negotiations between Kinshasa and the M23. The recent summit underscored the need for direct political dialogue to address the underlying causes of the conflict. However, previous attempts at talks were stymied when the M23 rebels withdrew following EU sanctions against their leadership, and Rwanda’s Kagame is reportedly facing increased international pressure regarding the DRC situation.
