A report from REACH’s Humanitarian Situation Monitoring indicated significant distress between July and October 2024, with 97% of assessed localities in Tombouctou and 73% in Ségou experiencing one or more security shocks, such as violence and looting. In critical areas like Goundam and Gourma-Rharous within Tombouctou, all surveyed localities reported these negative impacts.
Additionally, alarming figures show that flooding has compounded the insecurity issue, affecting 72% of localities in Tombouctou and 62% in Ségou. The surge in basic market prices has also contributed to the crisis, impacting 58% of Tombouctou localities and 43% in Ségou. Economic instability is creating further hardship for residents as they struggle to meet essential needs amidst these crises.
Regarding population displacement, the report revealed that 34% of assessed localities in Tombouctou and 23% in Ségou had experienced significant out-migration. Notably, most of the displacements were internal, with many locals migrating within their regions. However, concerningly, in 24% of localities in Ségou that observed population movements, over 50% of the local populations had fled due to deteriorating conditions.
