Shanda Hill, an ultra athlete from Vernon, B.C., completed the first South Africa Deca Ultra Triathlon, finishing first among women and second overall. She faced extreme challenges but received widespread support and has raised over $10,000 for her future racing goals. Hill is looking for sponsors as she prepares for her next event in Brazil.

Shanda Hill, an ultra athlete from Vernon, B.C., successfully completed the inaugural South Africa Deca Ultra Triathlon on March 20, 2023. She was the only female competitor in this grueling event and finished wrapped in a Canadian flag, receiving warm congratulations from supporters. The triathlon included an arduous 38 kilometers of swimming, 1,800 kilometers of cycling, and 422 kilometers of running, completed in 279 hours and 30 minutes, all while facing significant heat and fatigue.

Throughout the race, Hill maintained a strong lead, particularly after starting off well in the swimming segment. Her partner, Jacs Spence, emphasized Hill’s significant achievement in finishing first among women and second overall, stating, “She showed up, stood alone, and held her ground. Not only that, but she also took second place overall. She gave these men a serious run for their money.”

After finishing, Hill expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support she received on social media, with numerous positive messages boosting her morale throughout the challenge. Spence highlighted this sentiment, noting, “Every word meant the world to her. She’s genuinely overwhelmed by the kindness and encouragement.”

Hill successfully raised $10,340 through donations during the past two weeks. This funding is aimed at achieving her goal of competing in every International Ultra Triathlon Association event in 2025, which would set a new world record. Donations can be made through shandahillultra.com.

After her exhausting victory, Hill is set to return to Vernon for recovery before her next event, the Brazil Ultra Tri in Rio de Janeiro, starting May 1, just 41 days after her current endeavor.

Shanda Hill’s accomplishment in the South Africa Deca Ultra Triathlon demonstrates her resilience and skill as an ultra athlete. As the only woman in the competition, she not only secured first place in her category but also made a strong overall finish. Her journey is supported by a generous community that has contributed to her future goals. With additional races on the horizon, Hill continues to garner support while focusing on her recovery and subsequent competitions.
