Zelensky’s Norway Visit: Confirmation of Ukraine-US Talks and Aid Increase

Ukrainian President Zelensky visited Norway to confirm diplomatic talks with the US, amidst skepticism about Russia’s ceasefire intentions. Key meetings included discussions with Norwegian leaders, focusing on Ukraine’s role in negotiations and an increase in aid from Norway for Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visited Norway to reinforce Ukraine’s diplomatic engagement with the United States while expressing doubt regarding Russia’s cooperation on a ceasefire. During his Oslo visit, he confirmed scheduled talks between Ukrainian and Russian representatives and their American counterparts set for Monday in Saudi Arabia, as reported by Xinhua news agency. However, Zelensky voiced concerns about Russia’s willingness to agree to a ceasefire, stating, “We are trying to take steps in the right direction.”

This trip marks Zelensky’s second official visit to Norway, where he held discussions with key figures including Finance Minister and former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, and Defence Minister Tore Sandvik. During a press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, emphasis was placed on Ukraine’s role in ceasefire negotiations, with Store asserting, “A strong European voice is important when discussing Ukraine’s future.”

Earlier in March, the Norwegian parliament decided to significantly increase aid to Ukraine by 50 billion Norwegian kroner ($47.2 billion), resulting in a total of 85 billion kroner by 2025. Store detailed that the additional funding would support artillery ammunition, drones, and investments aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s domestic defense industry.

Zelensky’s visit to Norway underscores Ukraine’s commitment to ongoing diplomatic dialogue with the United States while raising doubts about Russia’s willingness to engage in a ceasefire. The support from Norway, including significant financial aid, highlights the international community’s backing for Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions. The confirmed talks in Saudi Arabia reflect ongoing efforts for peaceful negotiations, with a strong emphasis on Ukraine’s involvement in shaping future agreements.
