On Friday, the Sudanese army successfully took full control of the Presidential Palace in Khartoum, marking a significant advancement in a protracted conflict that threatens the country’s stability, as reported by Sudan TV and military insiders. This development comes amid ongoing clashes involving the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Since the outbreak of war in April 2023, the RSF initially seized the palace and much of Khartoum. However, the Sudanese Armed Forces have gradually gained ground, especially along the River Nile, and are currently conducting searches in the surrounding areas for RSF members.
The RSF has been establishing a parallel government while holding control over portions of Khartoum, Omdurman, and western Sudan, where they are engaged in a battle to overtake the army’s last stronghold in Darfur, specifically in al-Fashir. Capturing Khartoum could accelerate the army’s consolidation of power in central Sudan and further entrench the territorial divide between the army and RSF.
Both the Sudanese army and RSF have pledged to persist in their military campaigns throughout the country, with no successful peace negotiations evident following the eruption of the conflict, which stemmed from a power struggle linked to a planned transition to civilian governance.
