Sudan Armed Forces Advance Towards Republican Palace Amid Ongoing Conflict

The Sudanese Armed Forces have advanced to within 500 meters of the Republican Palace in Khartoum amid intense fighting. Recent clashes caused 50 civilian fatalities and widespread detentions. The RSF is accused of burning villages in North Darfur, contributing to the humanitarian crisis. Areas like El Obeid see a fragile calm, while El Fula faces a surge in displaced individuals amid dire conditions.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) are advancing closer to the Republican Palace in Khartoum, now within 500 meters, as intense clashes continue in North Darfur and North Kordofan. This escalation comes nearly two years after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) took control of the palace. Recent military reports indicate the SAF destroyed an RSF convoy, aiming to reclaim Greater Khartoum, lost during the conflict that started in April 2023.

On Monday, SAF troops advancing from the south coordinated with army units in central Khartoum, resulting in heightened gunfire and explosions. Fighting has been reported on El Qasr and El Jamaa streets, with the SAF taking control of the El Fadil Hospital, located approximately 1.2 kilometers south of the palace, and progressing toward the Foreign Ministry.

Civilians are suffering tremendously amid the conflict, with a recent report indicating 50 civilian fatalities, including ten humanitarian volunteers, in Khartoum. Additionally, 82 individuals were detained by the RSF and associated militias. Emergency assistance is heavily hindered by both factions, with volunteers facing threats including killings and torture. In Nasser Square, it was confirmed that five women were killed in a drone strike as the RSF maintains a blockade on the area.

The Sudanese police have expanded their presence in Khartoum North and Sharg El Nile. Attorney General El Fateh Taifour Eisa announced upcoming deployment of prosecutors and courts to reinforce the rule of law.

In North Darfur, the SAF reported the deaths of an RSF commander and 15 fighters following an airstrike aimed at an RSF unit near El Fasher. Recent RSF attacks have led to considerable damage to homes and schools in El Fasher. Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab revealed that RSF forces set fire to at least 18 villages in multiple districts, displacing residents and destroying their means of living between February 19 and March 16.

Calm has returned to El Obeid in North Kordofan after recent RSF operations, with no new shelling reported. In West Kordofan, El Fula is experiencing a significant rise in displaced individuals, with activists noting severe humanitarian conditions and inadequate aid supplies.

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has led to severe humanitarian crises, with the Sudanese Armed Forces closing in on the Republican Palace amid ongoing battles. Civilian casualties are mounting, and emergency aid efforts are severely compromised. Recent reports from North Darfur highlight systematic destruction and displacement caused by the RSF, while conditions in refugee-dense regions like El Fula deteriorate sharply due to the influx of displaced individuals and lack of assistance.
