Outgoing President Nangolo Mbumba praised Namibian women for achieving significant leadership roles, particularly highlighting Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s election as the first female president since the nation’s independence 35 years ago. Nandi-Ndaitwah’s inauguration on Friday marks a historic moment as she becomes the first duly elected woman president in Southern Africa, following Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia.

Mbumba, bidding farewell to dignitaries at State House on Thursday, expressed his contentment at leading a country approaching near-equal representation in parliament, adhering to the zebra style policy aimed at enhancing gender parity in political positions. He noted, “In recent years, we have seen the results of these efforts reflected in one of the most valued institutions of our democracy, parliament, which has close to a 50/50 representation between men and women.”

He emphasized that March 21 symbolizes a peak in efforts toward empowering Namibian women, stating, “Our Namibian women and girls will break the glass ceiling by ascending to the highest echelons of state power.” Reflecting on his tenure, Mbumba said he was honored to serve alongside President Geingob, describing him as a brother and friend.

Mbumba expressed sadness at Geingob’s passing in February, saying, “Most regrettably, I am the only one who can say my goodbye today and I accept that it is my destiny to say goodbye to State House.” He appreciated the support from Namibians during his tenure and noted that his term was both fulfilling and challenging as he aimed to complete Geingob’s leadership term.
