Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel participated in the IV International Colloquium “Patria,” featuring Lebanese journalist Wafica Mehdi’s lecture on media and propaganda. The event included discussions on digital hate speech and sovereignty, drawing nearly 500 participants worldwide. Experts addressed media’s role and strategies from the Global South against Western information dominance.

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel attended the lecture by Lebanese journalist Wafica Mehdi, titled “Media Lessons of the Palestinian Genocide: Propaganda, Silencing and Informative Resistance.” This event was part of the closing ceremonies of the IV International Colloquium “Patria.” Mehdi is the director of the Spanish-language editorial office at the pan-Arab satellite network Al Mayadeen.

The final sessions of the three-day colloquium included panels such as “Reprogramming the Net: Strategies to Mitigate Polarization and Hate Speech in Digital Environments,” led by journalist José Manzaneda from Cubainformación. Another session focused on “Technologies for Emancipation: Alternative Communication and Information Sovereignty in the Global South,” featuring Venezuelan Jorge Arreaza and Bolivian professor Sacha Llorenti.

Prominent experts participating in the colloquium included Pascual Serrano and Carlos Penalva from Spain, Alina Duarte from Mexico, and Gabriela Rivadeneira from Colombia. Discussions centered around strategies from the Global South responding to the information hegemony of the West, the role of media as political actors, and digital consumption trends.

Titled “We Are Peoples Weaving Networks,” the IV International Colloquium “Patria” attracted nearly 500 participants from over 40 countries. The discussions focused on left-wing political communication amidst prevailing media conflicts.

The IV International Colloquium “Patria” served as a critical platform for discussing media strategies and communication challenges faced by the Global South. By engaging diverse experts and addressing pressing issues related to digital polarization and information sovereignty, the event highlighted the importance of alternative narratives in the global media landscape.
