War Veterans Accuse Tagwirei of Economic Corruption in Zimbabwe

Kudakwashe Tagwirei is under fire from war veterans led by Blessed Geza, who accuse him of monopolizing the economy for corrupt gains and warn of actions against him. Tagwirei’s business dealings include high-profile government contracts and significant influence in mining and fuel sectors, raising concerns over rampant corruption in Zimbabwe under President Mnangagwa’s leadership.

Kudakwashe Tagwirei, a close ally of President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is facing criticism from war veterans like Blessed “Bombshell” Geza. Geza accused Tagwirei of monopolizing key economic sectors for corrupt purposes. He claimed that Tagwirei exploits his relationship with Mnangagwa to expand his corrupt activities and secure significant government contracts.

Geza warned Tagwirei, saying the war veterans will hold him accountable and prevent him from continuing corrupt practices. “We did not go to war so that you could monopolise corrupt contracts. We are going to deal with you decisively… Zimbabwe will be a shell, and this is totally unacceptable,” he stated.

Tagwirei has engaged in various high-profile contracts, including a multimillion-dollar deal for constructing the Mbudzi Interchange flyover, alongside expansive interests in mining and a near-monopoly in the fuel sector. Furthermore, he leads the Command Agriculture program and chairs the Land Tenure Implementation Committee.

His business, Sakunda Holdings, has been linked to a scandal involving the loss of $3 billion from the Ministry of Agriculture between 2017 and 2018, leading to sanctions imposed by the United States for facilitating corruption among government officials.

Geza emphasized that corruption under Mnangagwa’s regime has severely impacted Zimbabwe due to cronyism. “Corruption in Mnangagwa’s government has become a cancer in this country. We fought for economic emancipation and the equitable distribution of resources, but Mnangagwa is taking everything away from the country,” he concluded.

The ongoing conflict within Zimbabwe’s ruling party highlights the allegations against Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who has been accused of monopolizing economic sectors and engaging in corruption linked to his closeness to President Mnangagwa. War veterans express their determination to confront these corrupt practices, calling for accountability and emphasizing the detrimental effects of corruption on the nation’s resources.
