Somalia supports Qatar’s mediation between DRC and Rwanda aimed at easing tensions following conflicts in eastern DRC. The initiative promotes an immediate ceasefire. The talks involve DRC’s President Tshisekedi and Rwanda’s President Kagame, marking the first face-to-face dialogue since M23’s escalation. Qatar’s role in promoting peaceful conflict resolution is also acknowledged by Somalia.
Somalia has expressed its support for Qatar’s diplomatic initiatives, which recently facilitated a meeting between the leaders of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda in Doha. The meeting, overseen by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, aimed to alleviate tensions related to ongoing conflicts in eastern DRC between President Felix Tshisekedi and President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
In a statement released by Somalia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative was celebrated as a significant move towards achieving peace and stability in eastern DRC and the surrounding area. Additionally, the Somali government reiterated its solidarity with both the DRC and Rwanda in their quest for peace, encouraging an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.
Somalia also acknowledged Qatar’s role in fostering dialogue for conflict resolution. The ministry conveyed its gratitude, stating, “We extend our appreciation to the State of Qatar for its role in promoting constructive dialogue and mediation to resolve conflicts through peaceful means.”
The meeting in Doha was the first direct interaction between Kagame and Tshisekedi since the escalation of attacks by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels in eastern DRC. M23, alleged by Kinshasa to be supported by Rwanda, had previously captured Goma and later advanced towards Bukavu.
Although both leaders have called for a ceasefire, the compliance of M23 rebels, who previously withdrew from peace talks in Angola, remains uncertain.
Somalia’s endorsement of Qatar’s mediation signifies a crucial step towards resolving tensions between the DRC and Rwanda. The discussions aim to actively pursue peace in the region while highlighting the importance of diplomatic dialogue. However, the future compliance of M23 rebels with the ceasefire remains uncertain, casting doubt on the sustainability of these peace efforts.
