President Ruto appointed Susan Nakhumicha as Permanent Representative to the UN Habitat. This nomination follows her prior role as Health Cabinet Secretary and includes several other diplomatic appointments. The nominations will undergo approval from the National Assembly as per constitutional requirements.
Former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has been appointed by President William Ruto to a new position, nine months after leaving her previous role. She is set to serve as the Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Kenya to the United Nations Habitat in Nairobi. This nomination was announced by State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed on Thursday afternoon.
In addition to Nakhumicha, Ruto nominated James Buyekane Muhati as Consul-General in Guangzhou, China, and Abdi Dubat Fidhow for the same role in Arusha, Tanzania. Peter Tum has been appointed as the Kenyan Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of Congo, while Alfred K’Ombundo is nominated as Deputy Head of Mission in Belgium.
The announcement referenced Article 132 (2) (e) of the Constitution, which allows the President to nominate individuals for key diplomatic roles. The nominations have been sent to the National Assembly for review and approval, aligning with the legal requirements of the Kenyan Constitution.
Nakhumicha’s new role comes after her recent public appeal to the President for a government appointment, citing personal financial difficulties she has faced since leaving office.
President William Ruto’s recent nominations highlight the ongoing reshuffling within the government. Notably, former Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha secured a significant role at the UN Habitat, along with several other appointments in diplomatic positions. Nakhumicha’s public request for a new position illustrates the challenges faced by former officials during transitions of power while also emphasizing the constitutional framework that guides these appointments.
