Michael Olunga, the Harambee Stars captain, encourages Kenyans to attend the upcoming match at Nyayo National Stadium, marking the team’s return after three years of competing abroad. This match is crucial for their World Cup qualification efforts. He also acknowledges the government’s role in restoring the stadium to international standards, contributing to the football scene in Kenya.
Michael Olunga, captain of Harambee Stars, has addressed Kenyans ahead of the team’s first match at Nyayo National Stadium after over three years. The last competitive fixture hosted by Harambee Stars at home was on November 15, 2021, against Rwanda, due to the lack of a CAF-approved venue in the nation.
With Nyayo Stadium now officially CAF-approved following renovations, Harambee Stars will host their 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifying match against Gabon on March 23, 2025. Olunga has called upon fans to attend in significant numbers to support the team’s World Cup aspirations.
Olunga expressed his excitement about the return of international competitive matches in Kenya, stating, “We will play our first competitive international match at home in four years, and that will really be good.” He emphasized the importance of fan support for the team’s morale.
He also thanked the Kenyan government for ensuring Nyayo Stadium’s readiness for international events and mentioned the ongoing upgrades at Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, and Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret. Additional renovations are taking place at Police Sacco Stadium, Kirigiti Stadium, and Kasarani Annex, along with the construction of a new facility, Talanta Sports City, which is currently 40% complete.
Michael Olunga’s appeal emphasizes the significance of local support for the Harambee Stars as they prepare for their long-anticipated return to competitive football at home. With upgraded facilities and strong encouragement from the captain, the upcoming match presents a vital opportunity for fans to rally behind their national team and contribute to their World Cup journey.
