Female diplomats and UN agency representatives commended Ethiopia’s progressive approach to women’s empowerment during International Women’s Day celebrations. They emphasized education, self-belief, and active participation as key components for women’s development. Increased involvement of women in various sectors remains essential for further progress.
On March 18, 2025, female diplomats and representatives from UN agencies praised Ethiopia’s progressive laws aimed at empowering women during the 2025 Safaricom Women First 5km event in Addis Ababa, which celebrated International Women’s Day. They highlighted the significance of the meaningful inclusion of women in development efforts to realize national aspirations.
Margaret Atieno, Deputy Representative of UNHCR in Ethiopia, stressed the critical role of education for women, stating that it allows them to take full advantage of available opportunities. Meanwhile, EU Ambassador Sofie From-Emmesberger commended the Ethiopian government’s proactive role in multiple initiatives aimed at uplifting women’s status and opportunities for a wider community impact.
Ambassador Emmesberger noted the necessity for women to actively participate in this transformation process, acknowledging that Ethiopia still lags in women’s contributions across various sectors. She called for increased participation of women in societal aspects to address this gap.
Mariko Kagoshima, the UNICEF Deputy Representative, affirmed the government’s commitment to empower citizens and enhance capabilities, describing these efforts as encouraging but emphasizing the need for their sustainability. Kagoshima also pointed out that fostering self-belief among women is vital for achieving their personal ambitions.
Vanessa Prinz from the German Embassy reflected on Ethiopia’s government initiatives focused on promoting and safeguarding women’s rights. She indicated that success for women hinges on both self-empowerment and external support, which can create a strong foundation for progress and the realization of their potential.
Ethiopia’s commitment to empowering women through progressive laws and initiatives has garnered support from female diplomats and UN representatives. They underscore the essential role of education, self-belief, and active participation in societal development. However, the call for increased contributions from women indicates the ongoing challenges in achieving this empowerment. Ensuring sustained efforts, both internally and externally, will be crucial in bridging these gaps and creating a more equitable society.
