The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, visited Angola and met with President Lourenço, focusing on peace and security issues across Africa, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia. They discussed enhancing the African Peace and Security Architecture and emphasized the importance of infrastructure development for economic transformation and regional integration towards Agenda 2063.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, completed an official visit to Angola on March 18-19, 2025. During the visit, he met with H.E. João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of Angola and the African Union Chairperson, who plays a vital role in promoting peace and security in Africa.
The discussions between the leaders centered on peace and security across the continent, with particular emphasis on the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Somalia. Chairperson Youssouf praised President Lourenço’s leadership and both affirmed their dedication to the Luanda process.
They acknowledged the complex challenges these nations face and underscored the need for ongoing African Union involvement to support stabilization and inclusive political processes, ultimately aimed at achieving lasting peace and enhancing national institutions.
Both leaders stressed the necessity to bolster the African Peace and Security Architecture, improve the effectiveness of Regional Economic Communities and Mechanisms, and strengthen the African Union Peace and Security Council to effectively address emerging threats. They reiterated the importance of advancing the “Silencing the Guns” agenda for achieving sustainable peace and stability.
Their shared vision for the African Union included the critical role of infrastructure development in promoting regional integration and economic transformation while advancing Agenda 2063. They expressed anticipation for the US-Africa Business Forum in June 2025 and the October 2025 Summit on Mobilizing Resources for Infrastructure Development, viewing them as vital opportunities for investment in Africa’s development.
During his visit, H.E. Youssouf also engaged with the diplomatic community in Luanda, accompanied by H.E. Mr. Téte António, Angola’s Foreign Minister. He outlined his strategic priorities for the African Union and reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to peace, security, and development on the continent.
The Chairperson emphasized the African Union’s resolve to collaborate with international partners to achieve its strategic goals, underscoring the shared interest in enhancing peace, security, and sustainable development throughout Africa.
