Vietnam and Hungary are enhancing their multifaceted cooperation as they mark 75 years of diplomatic relations. Discussions between foreign ministers emphasized trade, education, and socio-economic collaboration, with both nations seeking to maximize benefits from existing agreements. They also agreed on peaceful conflict resolution methods regarding regional issues.
On March 19, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son of Vietnam held discussions with Hungarian Minister Szijjarto Peter in Hanoi. They agreed to enhance cooperation in various sectors to further their comprehensive partnership, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Son emphasized Vietnam’s commitment to multifaceted cooperation with Hungary, its first comprehensive partner in Central and Eastern Europe.
During the talks, Son expressed gratitude towards the Hungarian Government, urging them to facilitate a stable environment for the Vietnamese community in Hungary, which would contribute to the socio-economic development and bilateral relations. Szijjarto acknowledged Vietnam’s significant achievements in socio-economic growth and its increasing influence globally, highlighting Hungary’s intention to strengthen ties with Vietnam, a key partner in Southeast Asia.
Over the 75 years, Vietnam and Hungary have seen their traditional friendship flourish, covering politics, trade, education, health, and more. Hungary stands as a major trading partner for Vietnam in Central and Eastern Europe, with bilateral trade remaining robust at around $1 billion annually, despite global economic adversities. Both nations recognized ample potential to enhance cooperation further.
To foster growth, they agreed on increasing high-level exchanges and aligning on multilateral initiatives, including the UN and ASEAN-EU frameworks. They plan to maximize benefits from the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) and facilitate trade in agricultural products and investments in sectors such as pharmaceuticals and food processing.
Furthermore, they aim to expedite ratification of the EU-Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and expand collaborations in education, agriculture, IT, and climate change. An agreement on the readmission of citizens is expected to support labor cooperation. Plans for the 10th session of the Vietnam-Hungary Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation are set for Hanoi. Furthermore, both sides asserted that resolving regional issues, including the East Sea and Ukraine, should be done through peaceful means in accordance with the UN Charter.
Vietnam and Hungary are reaffirming their commitment to enhancing bilateral relations as they celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties.
