The UAE participated in the 9th Brussels Conference on ‘Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition’ held on March 17 and 18, 2025, as represented by Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister for Political Affairs. The conference aimed to rally global support for a peaceful transition in Syria, engaging EU institutions, partner countries, the UN, and Syrian civil society, with commitments made to assist those affected by the conflict.

Discussions focused on facilitating the voluntary return of refugees while minimizing the pressure on host communities and the limited infrastructure in Syria. The importance of an inclusive transition process in Syria was highlighted by Nusseibeh, who stressed the crucial role of women in peace negotiations, stating that a direct correlation exists between women’s participation and the sustainability of post-conflict peace.

Nusseibeh urged collective action to combat terrorism and prevent terrorist groups from regaining footholds in Syria. She condemned recent violence against Syrian civilians and security forces, calling for accountability for the attackers. The UAE’s commitment to humanitarian aid was affirmed, with contributions totaling more than EUR 1.5 billion since the conflict began, including EUR 250 million in recent years.

The UAE’s unequivocal stance on supporting Syrian stability and integrity was reiterated, with calls for Israel to adhere to international law. Besides the conference, Nusseibeh engaged in discussions with EU officials and diplomats from both Europe and the Middle East, enhancing collaborative efforts for Syria’s future.

The UAE’s participation in the Brussels Conference underscores its commitment to a peaceful transition in Syria, emphasizing inclusive governance, women’s involvement in peace processes, and a strong stance against extremism. The country’s significant humanitarian aid contributions signal ongoing support for the Syrian people. Furthermore, the dialogue with EU officials illustrates the UAE’s proactive role in fostering stability and cooperation in the region.
