The United Arab Emirates (UAE) was represented by Her Excellency Lana Nusseibeh at the Ninth Brussels Conference on ‘Standing with Syria: Meeting the Needs for a Successful Transition’, held on March 17-18, 2025. This gathering included EU representatives, partner nations, the United Nations, and Syrian civil society to foster international support for Syria’s inclusive and peaceful transition.
The conference aimed to mobilize sustained assistance for Syrians, discussing strategies for the safe and voluntary return of refugees which would alleviate pressures on host communities while protecting local support systems.
In her address, Nusseibeh praised participant efforts toward a better future for Syria, emphasizing the necessity of inclusive transition processes that empower women in peace negotiations. She stated, “There is a strong link between the active engagement of women in negotiating peace agreements, and the long-term durability of those post-conflict settlements.”
Nusseibeh highlighted the urgency of promoting tolerance and countering terrorism, advocating for collaborative efforts to prevent terrorist groups from regaining footholds in Syria. She condemned the violence against civilians and security forces, calling for accountability for the actions of perpetrators.
The UAE’s assistance to Syria and Syrian refugees has exceeded EUR 1.5 billion since the onset of the conflict, including EUR 250 million provided in the last two years. Nusseibeh reiterated the UAE’s commitment to Syria’s sovereignty and stability, urging Israel to respect international law and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement. In addition to the conference, she engaged in discussions with EU officials and diplomats from Europe and the Middle East.
