Rising Death Toll and Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan Amid RSF Clashes

Clashes in Sudan, particularly in Khartoum, have resulted in at least 50 deaths due to RSF attacks. Reports highlight abductions, rising malnutrition, and declared famine in several regions. The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, has displaced millions and triggered critical humanitarian issues in Sudan.

Over the past week, clashes in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum, have resulted in at least 50 fatalities, primarily due to assaults by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The Khartoum Emergency Response Room reported dire violations by the RSF and allied militias, affecting civilians across various regions. Abduction cases have surged, with around 70 people, including 12 volunteers, taken in the last week, while forced displacement in central and southern Khartoum has noticeably increased.

Reports indicate rising instances of sexual violence, although precise figures are elusive due to societal fears and stigma. Additionally, malnutrition has spiraled to alarming levels, leading to the deaths of seven children since early March according to the same report. UNICEF estimates that this year, around 3.2 million children in Sudan may face malnutrition.

A recent U.N.-backed assessment has declared famine in three displacement camps in Darfur and sections of the Nuba mountains, signifying further humanitarian crisis escalation. The RSF-army conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has seen the army intensifying its efforts to reclaim territory in Khartoum and extending areas. RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo proclaimed his fighters would maintain control over key locations, including the Republican Palace.

The Sudanese army reported advancements from the south, converging forces within Khartoum, escalating pressure on RSF fighters. This conflict has led to the deaths of tens of thousands nationwide, displaced over 12 million people, and triggered the largest hunger crisis globally. In Khartoum, 3.5 million individuals have been uprooted, with at least 100,000 facing acute famine, as per U.N. findings.

The current situation in Sudan reveals a severe humanitarian crisis, exacerbated by the RSF’s violent actions in Khartoum. The reported fatalities, rising malnutrition, abductions, and the alarming declaration of famine illustrate the urgent need for increased international attention and intervention. With millions displaced and facing food insecurity, swift measures are required to alleviate the rising suffering in the region.
