Former Renamo guerrilla fighters demanded the resignation of Ossufo Momade during protests in Chimoio, attributing the party’s electoral failures to his leadership. Accusations of collusion with the ruling Frelimo Party and calls for a new leader are central to the unrest, with escalated actions planned against Renamo’s district delegations.
On Monday morning, former guerrilla fighters from Mozambique’s Renamo rebel movement protested in Chimoio, Manica province, closing down the provincial delegation with chains and padlocks. They symbolically burned leaflets depicting Renamo leader Ossufo Momade, demanding his immediate resignation due to perceived failures in the party’s leadership, particularly after the poor election performance on October 9, 2022.
Renamo brigadier Fernando Mafenhure, the spokesperson for the protesters, stated that Momade has done enough for the party and should step back to participate as a regular member. Mafenhure’s remarks indicate dissatisfaction with Momade’s leadership, claiming, “He has shown that he is a bad leader” and criticizing his lack of dynamic response since taking over in 2019. The former guerrillas feel the party’s reputation and popularity have significantly declined under Momade.
Mafenhure expressed nostalgia for the late Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama, asserting that Dhlakama championed true democracy and valued the contributions of fighters. He conveyed frustration over the lack of results from their long-term efforts and accused Momade of an alleged alliance with the ruling Frelimo Party during recent elections.
He stated, “He negotiated the elections with Frelimo!” suggesting that Momade’s silence signifies complicity with the ruling party. Mafenhure also announced plans to escalate their protests by shutting down all district delegations until Momade resigns. The health of Momade has been a concern, as he is reportedly undergoing treatment outside of Mozambique.
The Renamo dissidents are calling for a leadership change due to dissatisfaction with Ossufo Momade’s performance as party leader. Protests are escalating, with demands for his resignation directly tied to recent electoral struggles and accusations of collusion with the ruling party. The discontent reflects deep-rooted issues within the party, particularly regarding the legacy of previous leadership and recognition of former guerrilla fighters’ contributions.
