The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique (ANAMM) recently pledged to take action towards national development. This commitment includes establishing a national development company aimed at procuring equipment for shared use among municipalities. ANAMM President João Ferreira emphasized their readiness to support improved service delivery and overall country development after a meeting with President Daniel Chapo.
At the meeting, Ferreira, also the mayor of Chimoio, highlighted the new development company’s goal of acquiring necessary equipment to address various district-level challenges faced by municipalities. This initiative aims to enhance municipal capabilities and community support across Mozambique.
Simultaneously, Mozambique has been facing significant social unrest since October, primarily driven by demonstrations against the election results favoring the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo). The protests, initiated by former candidate Venâncio Mondlane, have sparked widespread dissent over election integrity, rising living costs, and other social issues, affecting multiple areas in the country.
Reports indicate that since October, protests have resulted in at least 327 fatalities, including minors, with approximately 750 individuals shot according to the independent organization Decide. The government, however, has confirmed around 80 deaths and noted considerable destruction of property, including 1,677 commercial properties, 177 schools, and 23 health facilities during the unrest.
The National Association of Municipalities of Mozambique is taking proactive steps to aid national development and enhance services across municipalities by creating a development company for shared equipment.
