On March 18, 2025, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) took significant steps to enhance the peace process in Sudan by hosting the Forum of Special Envoys in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. This meeting aimed to unify mediation efforts by engaging regional and international representatives to create a Sudanese-owned resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Led by IGAD Executive Secretary H.E. Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, the high-level meeting gathered special envoys and key stakeholders to align their mediation strategies. A structured framework was established to guide collaboration among these envoys, ensuring support for the Sudanese populace in achieving sustainable peace.
Dr. Gebeyehu emphasized the mediators’ role in ensuring that Sudanese voices are amplified throughout the peace process. He stated, “Our role as mediators is to facilitate a process that ensures the voices of Sudanese people are heard and their aspirations for peace are realised.”
The Forum identified five main priorities: enhancing coordination among envoys, creating an implementation roadmap for the Jeddah Declaration, engaging with civil society, aligning accountability efforts, and improving humanitarian diplomacy for affected populations. The need for ongoing dialogue and long-term strategies in the peace process was also highlighted.
