ECG Installs 200 Smart Prepaid Meters in Suame District, Enhancing Service Efficiency

The ECG has installed 200 smart prepaid meters in Suame District as part of a pilot project to improve service and reduce losses. The project includes technology for monitoring illegal connections and allows online credit purchases. Successful implementation could lead to a wider rollout across the region.

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has initiated a pilot project in the Ashanti West Region by installing 200 smart prepaid meters in the Suame District. This project includes 150 single-phase meters at Asuoyeboa and 50 three-phase meters at Bantama. It is designed to last for three months, after which a decision will be made regarding wider rollout across the district.

Mr. George Amoah, the regional manager, explained that this installation is part of the Loss Reduction Project (LRP), and aims to replace outdated and faulty meters for free. Suame District, serving over 120,000 customers, necessitated the dedicated prepaid meters despite having some smart metering solutions already.

The new meters feature advanced technology to record activity, aiding in the detection of illegal use. They will also automatically shut off during tampering, preventing the purchase of electricity credits. Mr. Amoah also confirmed that customers will retain any existing credits after the replacement.

In line with the Meter Management System (MMS), the new meters enable online credit purchases, making the process more efficient. The User Interface Unit allows customers to access real-time energy consumption information without leaving their homes.

Mr. Amoah announced that the ECG has resolved any outstanding meter applications from prior years in multiple districts, including Suame. He urged the community to report illegal connections, promising a 6% reward for information that helps curb such activities.
