On March 19, 2025, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), H.E. Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, expressed approval of the outcomes from a trilateral meeting hosted in Doha by Qatar. The meeting, attended by President Paul Kagame of Rwanda and President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), aimed to address the ongoing crisis in Eastern DRC.
The Chairperson praised both leaders for their dedication to dialogue and peaceful conflict resolution, highlighting that their commitment ensures peace, security, and stability essential for the prosperity of both nations and the entire Great Lakes region. Notably, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a ceasefire, as previously agreed at the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit on February 8, 2025.
The AUC emphasized its support for collaborative African-led solutions to local challenges, referencing existing initiatives like the Luanda and Nairobi processes. The constructive discussions in Doha are seen as supportive of ongoing regional mechanisms and highlight the need for continuous cooperation between the AUC and regional economic blocs and international partners to cultivate sustainable peace.
H.E. Youssouf conveyed gratitude to Qatar and its Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, for their role in facilitating the dialogue. The AUC called on all involved parties to capitalize on the progress made in Doha and collectively pursue the implementation of agreements reached.
