UPDF warns NUP against a militant approach, citing divisive politics and violence incitement as reckless. With regional tensions, UPDF stresses its role in maintaining security and vigilance concerning NUP. The party’s recent military-style parade raises additional concerns about its conduct.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has issued a warning to the National Unity Platform (NUP) regarding its militant posture. Col Chris Magezi, the acting spokesperson for UPDF, expressed concern over NUP’s practices, categorizing them as divisive and inciting violence, which he described as reckless behavior that should be abandoned.
Col Magezi pointed out that NUP’s recent activities include engaging in hate speech and promoting violence. He emphasized that such actions are detrimental and labeled the party’s approach as misguided adventurism, urging them to reconsider their methods for the sake of public safety.
In the context of regional instability, Magezi highlighted the severity of conditions in the Great Lakes region, which is fraught with armed groups seeking influence. He noted Uganda’s critical role in maintaining peace and security by countering these violent organizations, which may include terrorist factions.
As an established counter-insurgency force, Magezi assured that UPDF is monitoring NUP closely and is prepared to take appropriate action should the situation escalate. He underscored their commitment to vigilance and preparedness in ensuring national security.
NUP recently organized a ‘foot-soldiers parade’ where supporters donned military-style uniforms, claiming that the attire promotes discipline among their ranks. This demonstration has raised further concerns regarding their presentation and alignment with militant practices.
UPDF has cautioned NUP against adopting a militant stance, labeling their recent actions as reckless and divisive. Regional instability exacerbates the situation, with UPDF emphasizing its role in safeguarding national security amidst threats from various armed groups. The ongoing monitoring of NUP’s activities denotes a proactive approach to maintaining peace in Uganda.
