The tornadoes struck areas east of Girard in Burke and between Snelling and Barnwell in Barnwell County. Despite their EF-0 classification, these tornadoes still caused considerable damage.
The tornadoes were anticipated due to radar signals prompting five tornado warnings preceding their confirmation on Monday. Georgia also experienced tornado activity on the same day, notably in Paulding and Mitchell counties, alongside a twister that touched down in South Carolina’s Lake Murray. This South Carolina tornado, rated EF-1, caused significant damage in the Timberlake neighborhood and was estimated to reach peak winds of around 90 mph.
In Paulding County, damage reports indicated that 14 homes were impacted, primarily by fallen trees. Witnesses described dramatic scenes during the EF-1 tornado event late Saturday and into early Sunday. One resident recounted the chaos as trees fell onto their house, equating the sounds to explosions. Fortunately, everyone in the affected homes remained unharmed, and community members came together to assist those who were impacted.
Mitchell County also suffered damage, with severe impacts on local infrastructure. A tornado struck around 6:15 a.m. Sunday, affecting the Pebble City Baptist Church and reducing the nearby community center to rubble. The church’s pastor expressed gratitude for the church’s survival and stated that the damage could have been much more severe.
In Route to recovery, local officials were noted for their prompt efforts in power restoration and debris clearance in the region. Further damage occurred in nearby Alabama, where tornado-related incidents affected multiple communities, resulting in fatalities and extensive infrastructural damage, highlighting the broader impact of this severe weather event in the Southeast.
