Renaissance Group confirmed an explosion on its Trans-Niger pipeline in Rivers State. A response team is investigating the incident, which caused significant fire and environmental damage. The pipeline is crucial for transporting Nigerian crude oil and is now under Renaissance’s control following its acquisition from Shell.
Renaissance Group has reported an explosion on its Trans-Niger oil pipeline in Rivers State, prompting the dispatch of a response team for investigation. Tony Okonedo, the group’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident to Reuters on Tuesday, though he refrained from sharing additional details surrounding the event.
According to reports from TheCable, the explosion occurred in the Bodo community of Gokana LGA late Monday night, causing a significant fire in the area. A video circulating online depicted thick black smoke and flames rapidly spreading into local mangrove forests.
The Trans-Niger Pipeline (TNP) is an essential conduit for oil, handling around 450,000 barrels per day, and has recently come under Renaissance’s management, after previously being operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC).
Renaissance Africa Energy Holdings recently announced that, as of March 13, it has completed the acquisition of Shell’s entire equity stake in SPDC. The Renaissance consortium includes several Nigerian exploration and production companies, such as Aradel Energy and First E & P, as well as the international energy group Petroline.
The explosion on the Trans-Niger pipeline in Rivers State highlights the ongoing challenges in oil infrastructure management. The incident led to considerable environmental damage and the need for urgent investigation. As Renaissance Group undertakes this assessment, the recent acquisition from Shell positions the consortium for greater responsibility over critical oil transport operations in Nigeria.
