Ohlthaver & List (O&L) will rebrand Pick n Pay Namibia to Model starting 1 July. The change follows the termination of a 27-year franchise agreement with Pick n Pay South Africa, impacted by financial losses. O&L’s executive chairman Sven Thieme emphasized a renewed commitment to authenticity and quality in serving the Namibian market.
The Ohlthaver & List (O&L) Group is set to rebrand Pick n Pay Namibia to Model starting 1 July, following the termination of their 27-year franchise agreement with Pick n Pay South Africa. O&L aims to revive the Model Supermarket name, emphasizing a revitalized shopping experience. This change marks a return to their roots while enhancing their market offerings.
During the announcement, O&L’s executive chairman Sven Thieme highlighted that the shift from Pick n Pay to Model represents more than a simple name change but a commitment to redefine shopping in Namibia. The evolution reflects O&L’s history that began with Model in 1965 and signals a fresh new approach to retail that aligns with local needs.
Thieme noted the transition will utilize a phased refurbishment to gradually implement the full Model experience across its stores by the launch date. Managing director Graeme Mouton explained that Model aims to offer a unique shopping experience, featuring high-quality products that cater specifically to Namibian customers’ demands.
Mouton also emphasized that Model embodies a movement rooted in authenticity and care, embodying the core values of the O&L Group. The company, through its subsidiary WUM Properties, currently operates 19 Pick n Pay stores in Namibia but decided to end its franchise due to financial losses, which Thieme described as unsustainable. He stressed the importance of establishing a new business model to safeguard employee futures under the new brand.
Recent reports have indicated that Pick n Pay is facing significant financial challenges in South Africa, with projected losses and closures impacting its operational viability. These developments were one of the reasons O&L sought to end the collaboration, focusing now on building a sustainable future with Model.
The Ohlthaver & List Group’s transition from Pick n Pay to Model represents a significant strategic shift aimed at redefining the shopping landscape in Namibia. With a focus on local needs and quality products, Model’s reintroduction highlights O&L’s commitment to sustainability and customer engagement. As they embark on this new journey, they hope to establish a benchmark in retail that resonates with Namibian consumers.
