Ivory Coast is projected to achieve a record gold output this year, largely due to the new Lafigue mine. With a rise in production from 58 to 62 metric tons anticipated, the country aims to strengthen its mining sector and potentially surpass regional competitors in output, with projections aligning with Ghana’s production levels by 2030.
Ivory Coast is anticipating a record high in gold output this year, largely driven by the Lafigue mine, which commenced operations in 2024. Jean-Claude Diplo, an industry leader, emphasized the country’s efforts to enhance its mining sector, which has been historically underdeveloped, to diversify its economic income sources.
The Lafigue mine, situated approximately 500 km north of Abidjan, is operated by Endeavour Mining and is projected to produce between 180,000 and 210,000 ounces of gold in 2025. Diplo indicated that gold production is expected to increase from 58 metric tons in 2024 to 62 tons this year.
In an interview in Abidjan, Diplo stated, “Growth will come from the Lafigue gold mine, which is about to go into full production,” while highlighting that significant investments in another major mine will further boost output. Over the years, gold production has steadily increased, positioning Ivory Coast to potentially surpass Mali and Burkina Faso in the near future.
Diplo also noted that with disciplined management, Ivory Coast could align its gold production with Ghana by 2030. Other mining companies active in the region include Barrick Gold, Perseus Mining, and Roxgold, contributing to the industry’s growth and prospects for the nation.
In summary, Ivory Coast’s gold output is set to reach a record this year, driven primarily by the new Lafigue mine. With expected production increases and ongoing investments in the mining sector, the country is on track to become a significant player in gold production, aiming to rival Ghana by 2030 if trends continue. The involvement of multiple mining companies further supports this growth strategy.
