FDC Challenges Kawempe By-election Results Amidst Allegations of Irregularities

The FDC party in Uganda plans to legally contest the results of the Kawempe North by-election, alleging electoral irregularities. NUP’s Naukoola Luyimbazi won amid reports of violence and journalist assaults. FDC asserts the results misrepresent their local support, prompting plans for court action. Additionally, the ruling NRM party has expressed similar concerns, calling for a forensic audit of the election process.

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in Uganda plans to challenge the results of the Kawempe North by-election in court due to alleged irregularities. The election saw National Unity Platform’s Naukoola Luyimbazi win with 17,764 votes, while FDC’s candidate, Sadat Mukiibi, only received 239 votes. Reports indicate that the election was fraught with violence, including assaults on journalists by security forces during their coverage of the polls.

FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat stated that the results do not accurately reflect the party’s support in Kawempe. He asserted that the Electoral Commission failed to address the irregularities that marred the election process, claiming, “The results can never be a reflection of our strength in the division.” The party intends to seek costs incurred due to the election mishaps and demands reparations for injured journalists.

The by-election was reportedly marred by incidents where results from at least 15 polling stations were excluded by the Electoral Commission. Amuriat noted that one excluded station was where their candidate voted. FDC believes the heavy security presence intimidated their supporters during the voting process.

Interestingly, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) also expressed dissatisfaction with the election results. Secretary General Richard Todwong stated they would seek a forensic audit of the election, stating that the loss seemed unfair. His assertion highlights a larger concern regarding election integrity in Uganda.

The FDC party’s decision to challenge the Kawempe by-election results underscores serious concerns about electoral integrity in Uganda. With allegations of violence, journalistic suppression, and irregularities reported, both FDC and NRM are calling for accountability measures, including court action and forensic audits. This situation reflects a critical juncture in Ugandan politics, where electoral transparency is essential for fostering democracy.
