Fatal Paramilitary Attack in Omdurman: Casualties and Humanitarian Impact

A paramilitary attack in Omdurman led to at least seven civilian deaths and 43 injuries from RSF artillery fire, primarily affecting children. The RSF has not commented on the attack, which occurs in a highly populated area amid ongoing conflict in Sudan since April 2023, resulting in over 29,000 deaths and the displacement of millions.

On March 18, a paramilitary attack in Omdurman, Sudan, resulted in the deaths of at least seven civilians, including two children, due to artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The attack also left 43 people injured, including 18 children ages four to twelve, as reported by the state’s media office. Those wounded are currently receiving treatment in nearby hospitals.

The artillery shelling occurred in the Karari locality, during a time when local squares were populated with children playing football. Many of the injured sustained limb injuries from shrapnel. A paramedic at Al-Nao Hospital noted that some patients required amputations, while others had severe head injuries needing care beyond what the facility could provide.

The RSF has yet to comment on the incident, although the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) routinely accuse them of attacking the densely populated Karari locality, which remains a strategic area due to its proximity to multiple army bases. The ongoing conflict between the SAF and RSF, which began in April 2023, has resulted in approximately 29,683 fatalities and displaced over 15 million people, as outlined by the United Nations and the International Organization for Migration.

The recent artillery attack by the RSF in Omdurman highlights the ongoing violence in Sudan, with tragic consequences for civilians. The state media reports indicate significant casualties and injuries, particularly among children. This incident underscores the escalating humanitarian crisis amid a protracted conflict that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions, stressing the need for urgent intervention and support for affected populations.
