Cambodia anticipates fair treatment amid potential US visa restrictions under President Trump, citing cooperation on deportations. The US may categorize 43 countries into Red, Orange, and Yellow lists, with Cambodia on the Yellow list. Officials are addressing concerns related to deportations to maintain positive bilateral relations.
Cambodia remains optimistic about fair treatment regarding the potential new US visa restrictions, as noted by a spokesperson from the Foreign Affairs Ministry. The US administration, under President Donald Trump, is reportedly planning to impose travel bans affecting 43 countries, categorized as Red, Orange, and Yellow based on the severity of restrictions.
Cambodia is placed on the Yellow list, which is the least restrictive category. Citizens from 11 countries listed under the Red category will face a complete travel ban to the US, including nations such as Afghanistan, Cuba, and Iran. Countries classified under the Orange category will experience heavier visa restrictions, highlighting countries such as Belarus and Pakistan.
The Yellow category includes various countries, including Angola, Dominica, and the Kingdom of Cambodia. Nations on this list have 60 days to address specific administrative concerns or risk being moved to stricter categories. These concerns may relate to the deportation of Cambodian nationals who have committed offences in the US.
Chum Sounry, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, mentioned that Cambodia is seeking information through diplomatic channels as they have not received formal notification regarding these concerns. He emphasized that Cambodia has consistently collaborated with US authorities to facilitate the repatriation of its nationals, conducting interviews, and providing necessary travel documentation.
Chum Sounry stated that there are currently no obstacles hindering this repatriation process and expressed confidence that Cambodia’s cooperation and the positive bilateral relations with the US would be recognized favorably. As of November 2024, an estimated 1,747 Cambodians were awaiting deportation, as reported by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Cambodia is hopeful for favorable consideration regarding US visa restrictions, as the nation continues to cooperate with US authorities on deportations. With a structured categorization of travel limitations, Cambodia is positioned on the least restrictive Yellow list, and officials are proactively addressing concerns with the US government. Their commitment to facilitate repatriation and positive bilateral relations may influence the US administration’s final decision.
