The Second National Catholic Education Forum in Ghana concluded with a strong emphasis on enhancing the Catholic identity within educational institutions across the nation. Hosted by the Catholic Diocese of Koforidua from March 10 to 15, the forum focused on the theme “Catholic Education for Integral Development: Shaping a Resilient and Inclusive Ghana.” In the closing statement, the President of the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference (GCBC) highlighted the necessity for collective action, stating that effective educational delivery requires clear partnerships and defined roles.
Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi of the Diocese of Sunyani proposed several recommendations aimed at strengthening Catholic education. He suggested collaboration with organizations like the Christian Council of Ghana and the National Chief Imam’s Office to revise the draft Memorandum of Understanding concerning the management of Mission/Unit schools, which is to be signed by the government for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Furthermore, Bishop Gyamfi called for the establishment of a committee by the GCBC to create a 5-year national strategic framework for Catholic education by July 2025. He stressed the importance of reinforcing Catholic values in schools through teaching doctrines, building chapels, increasing the presence of clergy, and assigning chaplains to each institution.
